In addition, the use of our sheet piles in the field of flood protection has been gaining increasing interest for some time now.

Reports of flood disasters all over the world are becoming more and more frequent – they are no longer rare events. The smallest streams and rivers can turn into raging floods overnight, flooding basements, submerging entire villages, and sweeping away cars, houses, people, and animals. The related death toll and material damages are becoming increasingly devastating and frightening. In the Federal Republic of Germany alone, people look back with concern on the dramatic Elbe flood in 2002 and the flood disasters in 2005, 2013, 2021, 2023, and, most recently, in June 2024.

The flood situation is still incredibly tense at the moment. A slow-moving low-pressure wave continues to bring enormous amounts of rain from the Mediterranean to Germany and neighboring countries. In the Czech Republic, Poland, Austria, Romania, and Italy, entire areas are already under water. Dams and dykes have broken, bridges have collapsed, and several people have drowned in the floodwaters.

The floodwaters are now reaching into Germany. The Neisse, Spree, and Oder have already burst their banks, and the Elbe is on the verge of doing so. Although Germany is keeping a close eye on the water levels of its rivers, one thing is still certain: The floods in neighboring countries will hit Germany, but it is unclear how bad the flooding will be.

These dramatic developments clearly show that much more needs to be done in the field of flood protection.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1728304247766{margin-top: 25px !important;margin-bottom: 1rem !important;}”]What is flooding and how does it occur?

Flooding is a natural, regularly occurring event that has always been an integral part of the runoff process and an important factor in structuring the landscape in rivers and streams. Many of the animals and plant species living along streams and rivers are adapted to the alternation of flooding and drying out due to evolution and require the constantly changing conditions of their diverse habitats.
Several factors influence the occurrence of floods. These include for example, melting snow, prolonged rain showers, or high-intensity rainfall.

Some of the precipitation that hits the earth’s surface seeps away and recharges our groundwater. Another part evaporates or is temporarily stored in the soil. The extent to which precipitation seeps away evaporates or is temporarily stored and how much of it runs off on the surface depends on:

– the properties of the soil (e.g. soil type, compaction, vegetation)

– the degree of soil sealing

– the topography

If the above factors do not offer sufficient retention capacity for the rainwater, then the excess water, also known as surface runoff, flows on the surface of the soil eventually reaching the surface waters and increasing the water level. If precipitation or snowmelt falls on water-saturated or frozen ground, for example, most of it flows directly from the ground surface into the water bodies.

Another factor that has a massive impact on the occurrence of floods is mankind. This influences the probability of floods occurring, as well as their intensity and the resulting damage through our massive interventions in the natural course of streams and rivers and also through agriculture.

In Germany, for example, several bodies of water have been straightened or extended in favor of shipping in recent years, which has inevitably led to faster water runoff and the loss of natural floodplains. This loss, as well as the lack of natural retention options, means that during heavy rainfall, the water that overflows its banks can only seep away to a limited extent locally, overflowing its banks and causing flooding.

Many river streams were also narrowed. This led to a significant increase in the flow velocity of the watercourses. The faster flow velocity ultimately leads to a greater accumulation of water in the riverbed. More water is channeled faster in a shorter time. As a result, the flood wave is steeper, and water levels rise.

As the German landscape is strongly characterized by the area-intensive expansion of urban settlements into rural areas, more and more floodplains are being diked and dammed to create new settlement areas and agricultural land. To make these agricultural areas usable, wetlands have to be drained. Intensive farming with the use of heavy agricultural machinery leads to soil compaction, which in turn results in poorer rainwater retention. The surfaces sealed by housing developments can also no longer absorb or store water. As a result, it finds its way into the nearest body of water and, in the worst case, leads to flooding.

However, with the right flood protection measures and an optimized flood protection system, the occurrence of floods can be counteracted.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row bg_type=”bg_color” bg_override=”full” type=”vc_default” margin_top=”5″ margin_bottom=”15″ css=”.vc_custom_1728038229261{margin-top: 80px !important;padding-bottom: 80px !important;}” bg_color_value=”#f5f5f5″][vc_column css=”.vc_custom_1728034255667{padding-top: 80px !important;}”]

Flood protection in the city of Duisburg

[/vc_column][vc_column width=”6/12″][vc_column_text css=””]The technical sales office of Hoesch Spundwand und Projekte GmbH is located not far from Duisburg’s lifeline, the Rhine. As the longest river flowing through Germany, with around 865 km of its total 1,233 kilometers, it poses a considerable flood risk. In the winter months, especially when the snow melts, it carries large volumes of water. In combination with heavy rainfall, the water level can quickly reach critical levels and burst its banks. To hold back the water, the city of Duisburg has flood defenses made of sheet piling, among other types.

These sheet piles consist of individual steel sheets that are interlocked with each other by a special interlock shape and, in conjunction with bituminous or synthetic seals, form a highly resilient and waterproof barrier. The steel sheet piles are inserted into the ground using special construction machinery and can be additionally secured by other elements such as anchors. One of the above-mentioned sheet piling flood defenses of the city of Duisburg was transformed into a real eye-catcher by artist Martin Schmitz. With a colorful painting of the sheet piles, a “colorful and cheerful entrance” to Duisburg’s Neuenkamp district was created from the dull steel sheet pile wall. This example shows that a flood protection system made of sheet piling can be seamlessly integrated into a landscape or cityscape and can provide a visual enhancement. In addition to the aforementioned color coating, the sheet pile wall system can also be clad with wood/brick or greened.

www.waz.de/staedte/duisburg/article9760939/spundwand-ist-buntes-entree.html[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”6/12″ css=”.vc_custom_1728034153497{border-bottom-width: 20px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=””]Taking into account the specific landscape conditions and ecological requirements, a plant covering not only enhances the visual appearance but also improves the quality of life, as the green areas are often located in local leisure areas. At the same time, the greenery also helps to stabilize the ecosystem, which has been altered by the intervention in nature caused by the construction of the flood protection system. To summarise, it can be said that the use of steel sheet piling in flood protection enables a natural bank design that meets economic, ecological, and aesthetic requirements.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row bg_type=”bg_color” bg_override=”full” type=”vc_default” margin_top=”5″ margin_bottom=”15″ css=”.vc_custom_1728038235892{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}” bg_color_value=”#f5f5f5″][vc_column width=”6/12″]

[vc_empty_space]

Possible applications of sheet piling in flood protection:

Stabilisation and sealing of existing and new flood protection measures

New construction of dykes

Renovation of dykes

Planned dyke heightening

Basis for further flood protection structures

[/vc_column][vc_column width=”6/12″ css=”.vc_custom_1728034153497{border-bottom-width: 20px !important;}”]

What other advantages does the use of steel sheet piling offer in flood protection?

They have maximum impermeability to water.

Sheet pile walls are less sensitive to deformation (ductility).

They are resistant/resilient to chemical attack.

Steel sheet piles are supplied as ready-to-use products that are ready for immediate use.

They require a short installation time due to a high degree of prefabrication and therefore represent an efficient and economical solution.

Sheet piling can be installed in both existing and new dyke systems.

The installation of sheet pile walls is a space-saving option.

The fast installation time allows sheet pile protection dams to be erected even shortly before an impending flood.

Sheet piling is subject to strictly controlled quality standards at the factory.

They require virtually no maintenance or servicing.

Undisturbed excavation is possible.

They are so elastic that they can follow the movements of the soil without being destroyed.

Structural changes such as replacing, raising, deepening, extending, etc. are possible at any time.

The sheet piles are installed quietly and gently.

Vibration-free installation reduces soil compaction.

Steel is homogeneous and chemically harmless in the ground and water.
