Major construction work has been underway at the Bargteheide freeway junction. The bridge over the A1, where the A21 joins the B404, will be replaced by the end of 2025. The construction of a replacement bridge should allow traffic to continue as normal as possible during the construction phase.
According to the last bridge inspection, the current bridge from 1966 no longer meets road traffic and safety requirements. Due to cracks in the superstructure and corrosion damage to the steel parts, it has to be demolished and rebuilt in the same place as a 2-span overpass structure in steel composite construction.
Johann Heidorn GmbH & Co. KG was entrusted with the construction project. The traditional Hamburg-based company has been an expert in earthworks and special civil engineering for over six generations.
Hoesch Spundwand supplied the 27 tons of cold-rolled steel sheet piling in steel grade S235JRC required for the major project. Manufactured from sheet steel using a cold-forming process, these profiles offer high structural rigidity and low weight. Over the years, cold-rolled sheet piles have proven to be an economical and reliable solution in light to medium-weight constructions for sealing against soil and water. They are available in a steel thickness of 3 – 16 mm and can be supplied as standard sheet piles or as customized profiles.
In addition to cold-formed sheet piling, we also offer hot-rolled sheet piling for sale or rent. The difference between cold-rolled and hot-rolled steel sheet piles lies in the production method and the material thickness. Sheet piles made of hot-rolled steel are produced in a rolling process at high temperatures. They are available in steel thicknesses of up to 20 mm so that they can also be used in heavy and long-term sheet piling constructions.
